{"id":632,"date":"2009-04-28T13:10:58","date_gmt":"2009-04-28T21:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephan-zielinski.com\/dwa\/?p=632"},"modified":"2011-09-23T07:45:48","modified_gmt":"2011-09-23T15:45:48","slug":"swine-flu-ha-as-ambient-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stephan-zielinski.com\/dwa\/2009\/04\/28\/swine-flu-ha-as-ambient-music\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Swine Flu Hemagglutinin&#8221;: amino acid sequence as ambient music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swine flu has been sequenced. \u00a0More out of curiosity than anything else, I wrote code to translate a key gene into a piece of ambient music:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stephan-zielinski.com\/static\/Swine Flu Hemagglutinin.mp3\">&#8220;Swine Flu Hemagglutinin&#8221; (MP3)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The algorithm I used is a bit complicated, but just in case you&#8217;re curious: since the gene is expressed as a surface protein antibodies can sense, it&#8217;s considered as a string of amino acids. \u00a0Each beat corresponds to one amino acid, and the piece is in 3\/4 time, so each six measures would correspond to five turns around the alpha structure. \u00a0(I&#8217;m weaseling because I haven&#8217;t the foggiest idea how the protein actually gets folded.) \u00a0Amino acids with side chains that are neither aromatic not aliphatic control the piano and organ: the nine non-hydrophobics the piano, and the four hydrophobics the organ. The three amino acids with aliphatic side chains control the low synthesizer, while the four with aromatics control the percussion. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u05e9<\/p>\n<p>Update 2009-04-30: For folks coming in from the cnn.com article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/HEALTH\/04\/29\/swine.flu.song.music\/index.html\">Making music out of swine flu<\/a> and wondering about the line, &#8220;Zielinski saw it as a form of highly organized information that a human did not design.&#8221;: Yes, that phrasing raises the question of who or what I think DID design it.  (God?  Aliens?)  In reality, self-organizing systems evince great complexity without need for a conscious designer. Swine flu was not designed at all&#8211; it <em>evolved<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Strictly speaking, this is <em>a<\/em> version of swine flu hemagglutinin, FJ966952.
